AMERICAN a Key Supplier for World’s Largest UV Treatment Facility

On Oct. 14, 2013, New York City officials announced the completion of the world’s largest ultraviolet (UV) water treatment facility – the Catskill/Delaware UV Facility. For the project, AMERICAN SpiralWeld Pipe, a subsidiary of AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe Company, supplied more than 5,700 feet of 144-inch diameter pipe and approximately 4,600 feet of pipe and fittings in other diameters up to 120 inches. The 144-inch diameter spiral-welded steel pipe is the largest ever manufactured by ASWP.

The Catskill/Delaware UV facility is designed to treat more than two billion gallons of water a day, and it serves more than nine million people in New York City and portions of Westchester County. Because of the high quality of its source water, the city was allowed to build a UV disinfection plant rather than a more expensive water filtration plant. The $1.5 billion facility is located 19 miles north of Manhattan in Mount Pleasant, N.Y.
