AMERICAN recently joined Junior Achievement (JA) of Alabama representatives for the official ribbon cutting of AMERICAN’s new storefront inside the JA Economic Education Center in downtown Birmingham.
The 30,000 square-foot center will provide an immersive, real-world learning experience for approximately 20,000 seventh- and eighth-grade students each year. Through a simulated community, students step into the roles of business leaders, consumers and employees while developing practical skills in financial literacy, workforce preparedness and civic responsibility.
“Seeing this space come to life and knowing thousands of students will experience it each year is incredibly rewarding,” said Senior Vice President of Human Resources Julie Shedd, who also serves on the JA of Alabama Board of Directors. “We hope the AMERICAN storefront helps students make the connection between the infrastructure around them and the people, careers and businesses that keep their communities thriving. It is an investment in education, our industry and the future workforce.”
AMERICAN’s storefront represents the water utilities and sanitation services sector, giving students an opportunity to see how essential infrastructure supports communities and businesses. The interactive space highlights the important role AMERICAN’s pipe, valves and hydrants play in delivering and protecting two of our most valuable resources, water and energy.
