An investment in our employees, our customers and our communities

Next Generation Melt project

Project overview

AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe Company is investing $285 million over the next four years as it upgrades its ductile iron pipe operations to electric-powered furnaces, a more sustainable and flexible process with more pipe-making capacity.

AMERICAN’s Next Generation Melt Project will replace its current single cupola furnace with four coreless induction furnaces. The electric-melt technology is estimated to reduce the facility’s CO2e emissions by 62% and melting/holding process CO2e emissions by 95%, as the company is able to source energy from cleaner and renewable sources.

AMERICAN has helped deliver water and energy to communities since 1905. Investing in our facilities, our people and our communities are examples of how employee-owned AMERICAN does business The Right Way, following the Golden Rule principles of our founder John J. Eagan.

Engaging our workforce

AMERICAN currently employs about 1,600 people in Birmingham, and 2,900 people across the AMERICAN family of companies. An estimated 80-100 jobs will be created for the Next Generation Melt Project and future projects to increase production capacity.

AMERICAN employees receive competitive pay and excellent benefits, including medical and dental insurance, a robust 401(k) plan, paid vacation and parental leave. Employees also have opportunities for on- and off-site professional development, including tuition reimbursement and an apprenticeship program.

As this project comes online, we will need additional skilled trades to support it, and our in-house programs will provide employees with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in these areas.

Meeting Customers’ Needs

Ductile iron pipe is a critical part of the nation’s water infrastructure, delivering our most valuable resource to people and businesses. AMERICAN’s Next Generation Melt Project is an investment to install electric-powered furnaces that are more sustainable, flexible and that will increase the company’s melting capacity by 25%.

This project will be among the first of its kind in the U.S. ductile iron pipe industry to use this electric-melt technology on this scale.

Partnering with our communities

Since 1905, our mission has been to do things The Right Way by treating customers, employees and communities the way we want to be treated. We care for our neighbors and those in need throughout Birmingham and our surrounding communities.
