The mechanical joint works differently from other AMERICAN pipe joints in that no lubricant is used in the assembly process. The mechanical joint gland, which is made of ductile iron, is used to press the mechanical joint gasket into the bell. Then bolts or studs are threaded through the gland, squeezing the gasket into place. MJ glands can be specified when purchasing mechanical joint pipe, or they may be available as part of an MJ kit.
