The AMERICAN grooved joint, furnished in sizes 4" to 36", and the AMERICAN shouldered joint, furnished in sizes 18" to 64", are fabricated joints most often used in plant piping installations.
These joints are sometimes alternatives to the flanged joint, and they are suitable for all specified applications, such as those found in treatment plants and pump stations.
Both joints meet all applicable requirements of AWWA C606.
Available in both flexible and rigid designs, grooved and shouldered joints offer quick assembly. If a field-grooving machine is available, the field adaptability of grooved pipe may be advantageous.
Standard fittings are available with grooved joints and are normally available only with rigid grooving. Couplings for grooved joints may be furnished by AMERICAN but are not of our design or manufacture. Check AMERICAN for details and recommendations.

1.) “R” for sizes 4" and 6" is .120"; for 8"-12" is .145"; for 14" and 16" is .165"; for 18"-24" is .185"; and for 30" and 36" is .215".
2.) Minimum nominal wall thickness of centrifugally cast ductile iron pipe furnished with grooved joint. Thicknesses above correspond to special thickness class 53 for 4"-16" diameter, and special thickness classes 54 and 55 for diameters 18" and 20", respectively, and special thickness class 56 for diameters 24"-36".
AMERICAN shouldered joints are furnished on fittings and on statically cast pipe as shown below. On centrifugally cast pipe the shouldered joint is furnished with a welded steel end ring fabricated as shown below right. Consult AMERICAN regarding specific requirements.
Wall thickness will vary according to service requirements and with method of casting – centrifugal or static. Consult AMERICAN for details.
Shouldered Joints with other dimensions can be furnished under certain circumstances. Consult AMERICAN for details.
Couplings for shouldered joints are not designed or manufactured by AMERICAN, but may be furnished on request. Consult with AMERICAN for recommendations.
Welded rings can be furnished on minimum pressure classes of ductile iron pipe. Maximum laying length is 19’6" and minimum laying length is 1’6" for all sizes. Check with AMERICAN if smaller sizes of shouldered end pipes are desired.
