AMERICAN Marketing Services Manager Maury Gaston talks with the hosts of Water Online Radio about recent innovations in the water industry and how water systems can increase energy efficiency and lower pumping costs by installing ductile iron pipe.

The study looked at energy consumption and annual operating costs of Huntsville Utilities, Huntsville, Ala., for 2012 and found a modeled annual cost savings of $666,999 based on ductile iron’s increased efficiency. These savings translate to 7,110,105 fewer kilowatt-hours to operate the system than if another pipe material was used.

Maury D. Gaston, manager of Marketing Services for AMERICAN Ductile Iron Pipe, has been selected chair of the Auburn Alumni Engineering Council. The council advises Dean of Engineering Christopher B. Roberts on various matters pertaining to the college. Gaston will serve a three-year term as chair.

For more than 100 years, iron pipe has been the backbone of drinking water and waste water infrastructure in the U.S. and across the world. However, much of the 1 million miles of underground pipe in this country is nearing the end of its useful life. A recent study by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) looks at the impact of this aging and expanding infrastructure. The study, “Buried No Longer,” details findings and challenges cities must address to ensure a continued safe, clean and economically viable water supply.

Maury D. Gaston is the new chairman of the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame, which honors achievements that bring significant recognition to the state of Alabama.
