The award recognizes a PRSA member who demonstrates a strong, ongoing commitment to mentoring students and public relations professionals.

“Joy has been a role model and mentor for dozens of students and young professionals throughout her career,” said Philip Poole, past president of Alabama PRSA and vice chair of the PRSA College of Fellows. “Many have been recipients of Joy’s guidance, encouragement and advice through the years. She definitely demonstrates the mentoring qualities that Ron Council exemplified for Alabama PRSA.”

Carter’s more than 30 years of experience in public relations/communications includes work in nonprofit, government, higher education and corporate communications. She received her bachelor’s degree in PR/communications from Auburn University and her master’s certificate in Human Resources from Cornell University. She is Accredited in Public Relations (APR) and is a recognized Senior Practitioner by the Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF). She is also a member of the Public Relations Council of Alabama (PRCA).

Carter has served in various leadership roles with PRSA, PRCA and SPRF. Currently, she serves as vice chair of the national governing board for APR, vice chair of The Literacy Council’s Executive Board and on the board of Momentum, a women’s leadership organization.

The Ron Council Mentorship Award is named for the late Ron Council, a long-time member of the Alabama PRSA Chapter and founder of Metro Monitor in Birmingham.
