Summit Carbon Solutions Announces Partnership with AMERICAN Steel Pipe to Purchase American-Made, High-Strength Steel Line Pipe

Based in Birmingham, Alabama, AMERICAN Steel Pipe is one of the premier line pipe manufacturers in the U.S.

AMES, Iowa (Nov. 7, 2022) – Summit Carbon Solutions announced today it has placed orders for approximately $440 million of carbon steel line pipe from four American-based companies, including AMERICAN Steel Pipe, a division of AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe Company, based in Birmingham, Alabama. The pipe will be used in support of Summit’s transformative carbon capture, transportation, and storage project.  Additionally, the raw steel used to manufacture the coil that serves as the feedstock for AMERICAN will be sourced from U.S.-based mills. This order is a critical part of the company’s ongoing commitment to construct a pipeline system that is safe for landowners and the communities where it is proposed to operate.

The materials will be produced in the United States creating hundreds of jobs for American workers. With Summit Carbon Solutions currently partnering with 2,000 landowners to sign 3,200 easement agreements, the company’s project remains on track to begin construction in 2023 and transition to operation in 2024.

“At Summit Carbon Solutions, safety is our top priority and every decision we make reflects our overriding commitment to construct a carbon capture, transportation, and storage system that ensures the well-being of landowners and communities across the Midwest,” Summit Carbon Solutions COO Jimmy Powell said. “Similar to our other supplier partners, AMERICAN utilizes state-of-the-art technologies and high-quality materials that will allow us to safely and permanently store millions of tons of CO2 every year, while opening new economic opportunities for ethanol producers and bolstering our ag economy.”

AMERICAN is one of the premier line pipe manufacturers in the United States, and Summit Carbon Solutions’ order for high-frequency-welded line pipe will be used to safely transport captured CO2 to permanent sequestration sites in North Dakota.

Summit Carbon Solutions is partnering with 32 ethanol plants across the Midwest to develop the largest carbon capture and storage project in the world. Through this multi-billion-dollar infrastructure investment, these partners will be able to sell their product at a premium in the growing number of markets that have adopted low-carbon-fuel standards.

“For more than 100 years, AMERICAN has manufactured products across a wide range of industries, and today we are incredibly pleased to partner with Summit Carbon Solutions to help provide materials on a project that will grow critical economic industries and improve environmental outcomes,” said AMERICAN Steel Pipe Vice President of Sales Jon Noland. “AMERICAN, working closely with the Summit Carbon Solutions team, is committed to providing high-quality products that are safe for families and the communities they serve.”
